Barbara Bendlin, PhD, has been awarded an R01 from the National Institute on Aging for her study "SV2A PET imaging in Alzheimer's Disease." In this work, Dr. Bendlin and her research team will perform longitudinal PET (positron emission tomography) imaging in participants recruited from the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center to learn how synaptic loss changes throughout the course of Alzheimer's disease. The study will examine people with and without Alzheimer's disease, as well as those at risk for the disease.

Synaptic loss has been identified in Alzheimer's disease, but has not been studied extensively. This study will look at synaptic change in conjunction with amyloid and tau buildup, two other brain changes that happen in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

"This program of research is expected to improve early detection of AD, improve prediction of cognitive decline, and inform the development of new treatment strategies," the investigators wrote in the project proposal.

The grant will provide $3.7 million over 5 years. Co-PIs on the project include Sterling Johnson, PhD, and Bradley Christian, PhD.
