Canceled: Solomon Carter Fuller Brain Health Brunch and Ecumenical Candlelight Service of Remembrance, March 13-14

In alignment with the UW–Madison and CDC guidelines related to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the Solomon Carter Fuller Brain Health Brunch and Ecumenical Candlelight Service of Remembrance, scheduled for March 13 and March 14, have been canceled. The Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin, sponsors of the event, will be in contact when circumstances change and the event is rescheduled.

While there are relatively few confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Dane County, the number of cases nationally continues to grow. Event cancellation is part of a larger proactive UW–Madison campus plan to minimize person-to-person spread of COVID-19 in our community. Thank you for your understanding.

If you have questions about COVID-19, please visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control website. You can also find information on COVID-19 on the Public Health Madison & Dane County website, or you can hear a daily update by calling their information line at (608) 243-0587.

Dr. Peggye Dilworth-Anderson, professor of Health Policy and Management in the Gillings School of Global Health at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a renowned Alzheimer's disease researcher, will present the keynote address "My Story, Your Story: Sharing the Dementia Caregiver's Journey" at the 10th Annual Solomon Carter Fuller Brain Health Brunch on Saturday, March 14, at Wyndham Garden Hotel, 2969 Cahill Main in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. The event, which will take place 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will also feature workshops for caregivers, a wellness fair, and a performance by the Precious Memories Choir, a musical group made up of people with dementia and dementia caregivers. A free community brunch will be served.

This event is hosted by the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Register by calling 608-232-3400, or register online. Walk-in registration is also available at the event.

In conjunction with the Solomon Carter Fuller Brain Health Brunch, the programming committee will host an Ecumenical Candlelight Service of Remembrance at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2019 Fisher Street in Madison, on Friday, March 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This special service will feature acknowledgement and recognition awards for the people and organizations who helped establish and build the annual Solomon Carter Fuller Brain Health Brunch and associated activities. Being recognized at the service will be Ms. Charlie Daniel and Dr. Dorothy Farrar-Edwards, the trailblazers and visionaries who created the Solomon Carter Fuller Annual celebration.

The event is named after Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, the nation’s first African American psychiatrist and a pioneer in Alzheimer’s disease research. African Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to Caucasians. This program is held to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease in the African American community and provide education and resources to encourage a brain healthy lifestyle.
