Professional Activities

Jill N. Barnes, PhD, is assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and an affiliate faculty member in the Division of Geriatrics and Genontology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has recently received New Investigator Award from the American Physiological Society and the Edward C. Kendall award from the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Barnes is in the editorial board for the American Journal of Physiology: Heart & Circulatory Physiology, American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, and Frontiers in Exercise Physiology. The National Institute of Aging and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institute of Health have supported her research.

Research Interests

Her research interests include: cardiovascular regulation in humans; control of cerebral blood flow; mechanisms of central arterial stiffness; and cardiovascular risk in autoimmune diseases. Dr. Barnes has published over 60 peer-review journal papers on these topics. Her primary line of research is to understand the effect of aging on the structure and function of the blood vessels in humans and how this relates to the risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia. She is specifically interested in how age-associated changes in the structure and function of blood vessels influence the control of blood flow to the brain.
