The goal of this research study is to assess a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique called Water Exchange MRI and determine if it can reliably reflect the activity of the brain’s glymphatic system — a process that helps clear waste from the brain.
By participating, you are contributing to the development and validation of advanced MRI techniques that could improve early detection and monitoring of brain health across the Alzheimer’s disease continuum.
What will I need to do in this study?
If you qualify and choose to participate, you’ll complete the following
- One study visit (about 3.5 hours total), scheduled at a time convenient for you
- During the visit, you may complete:
- MRI scans (including a repeat scan) – approximately 1 hour of MRI scanning followed by a 30 min repeat MRI scan
- Cognitive tests and a brief health survey, approximately 1 hour
- Optional blood draw – approximately 5 teaspoons; adds ~30 minutes
- Most participants will complete everything in one visit
- If needed, some procedures may be completed during an optional second visit
Individuals who meet the following criteria:
• Adults age 55 or older
• Able to undergo MRI and neuropsychological testing
• Retains decision-making capacity at initial visit
• Either have a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or Alzheimer’s disease
• Adequate vision and hearing for completing neuropsychological questionnaires
• Stable (no change) medications for at least four weeks (if applicable)
Study Compensation
If you meet the above participant eligibility criteria and agree to take part in this research study, you will be paid up to $300 for your time and effort as follows:
Scan 1: $100 (MRI)
Scan 2: $50 (repeat MRI)
Neuropsychological (NP) tests and a health survey: $100
Optional blood draw: $50
