Nathaniel Chin: Hi everyone, welcome to Dementia Matters, a podcast brought to you by the University of Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Dementia Matters is a podcast dedicated to exploring the many aspects of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, for anyone and everyone interested in learning more.

Hi everybody, my name is Nathaniel Chin and I'll be your host for this podcast series, talking you through the latest headlines, research findings and advice for coping with this disease. You're listening to our introductory episode of Dementia Matters where you'll learn more about our podcast and some of the exciting episodes we have planned. Now, for starters, you might be wondering what my connection is to all of this. Well, I'm a geriatric physician at the University of Wisconsin and I work in the geriatric medicine memory clinics here at UW Health. I specialize in the assessment and management of people over the age of 65 with memory and cognitive disorders. What that means is I work with people who have concerns or problems with their ability to remember the past or are having issues with language, drawing, paying attention, multitasking, focusing, and overall function on a day to day level. However, my connection to this podcast extends well beyond my work as a physician. You see, I too have been affected by Alzheimer's disease. My father was diagnosed with add at the age of 61 right here at the University of Wisconsin and this is what led my wife and I moved back to Madison. We want it to be closer to him and my mother, his now caregiver, to help in whatever ways we could. It has been my goal to use my unique position as a family member of someone with dementia, and a physician who diagnosis the disease, to benefit others and to offer my experience and empathy. I hope to improve upon the already high quality of care provided to our patients with memory concerns as well strengthened the bridge between the research at UW and the community it's designed to help. It's my goal to put a face or rather voice to our thought leaders in this field. I want to humanize the science behind this disease because at the end of all of this, it's about the people. That said, we want to help answer any questions you as a community member might have. So please send us your questions on Twitter @WisconsinADRC or email us at dementiamatters@medicine.wisc.edu. In the episodes to follow, we'll be hosting a number of different guests from researchers to caregivers and everything in between. We will be providing you with updates on the latest research findings and offering you guidance on ways you can fight back against this disease. Thanks for listening to Dementia Matters and we hope you join us again for our first official episode coming soon.
