Maria Mora Pinzon, MD, MS, FACPM, was recently appointed to assistant professor on the tenure track in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where she will continue working with the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute and expand her research program.
Mora Pinzon will expand and build a research program focused on health services research in dementia care, barriers to medical care access in diverse, underrepresented communities, and health disparities in Latino communities, with a particular interest in improving access to care for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias for Latino individuals.
Mora Pinzon is a co-founder of @latinasinmedicine, a place for Latina healthcare providers to share stories and resources and build community, with more than 9,500 followers. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, Latina women assistant professors on the tenure track represent only 1.5 percent of all the assistant professors on the tenure track. In addition, Latina women comprise only 1.6 percent of all medical faculty in medical schools in the United States.
Mora Pinzon received her medical degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela – Escuela Jose Maria Vargas, a master’s degree in Clinical Research from Rush University (Chicago, IL), and completed Preventive Medicine Residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2017.
Dr. Mora Pinzon has held leadership positions in the American College of Preventive Medicine, the Medical Organization for the Latino Advancement in Wisconsin, and is a member of Health Policy Professional Interest Areas of The Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART). She was selected as the 2018 Young Physician of the year by the National Hispanic Medical Association, the 2020 William Kane Rising Star Award from the American College of Preventive Medicine, and was named by Medscape as one of the 25 Rising Stars in Medicine. Dr. Mora Pinzon is a REC scholar with the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and recently received a K99/R00 from the National Institute of Aging to fund her project “Improving Access to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia’s Care Services for Latinx Individuals at Community Health Clinics.”
