Wisconsin ADRC featured in Brava Magazine article on Alzheimer’s disease in Madison

The Wisconsin ADRC was featured in Brava Magazine’s recent article on Alzheimer’s disease in the Madison area. In Wisconsin, Alzheimer’s currently affects 120,000 people and took 2,085 lives in 2016. Nationally, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost $259 billion in 2017, and this sum is expected to reach $1.1 trillion by 2050. Yet, researchers at UW are optimistic, as there has been great advances in Alzheimer’s research in the last five years and believe they will be able to find a cure or treatments. ADRC research on blood glucose and insulin levels, exercise, diet, sleep, and microbial gut bacteria in relation to Alzheimer’s disease were just a few of the research areas mentioned.

The piece featured several scientists and staff members from the Wisconsin ADRC, including Dr. Barbara Bendlin and her research on proteins in fluids around the brain and loss of brain connections. Fabu Carter was also highlighted, mentioning her work as outreach specialist for the Wisconsin ADRC recruiting and retaining research volunteers and her success in substantially increasing the number of African-American participants in ADRC research.
