Fabu Carter, PhD, was recently quoted in an article about African Americans being at greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, the importance of diversity in research studies and the value of planning ahead in the event of an Alzheimer’s disease or dementia diagnosis.

African Americans are nearly two times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than white Americans, and they continue to be under-diagnosed and underrepresented in health initiatives studying Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.

Carter emphasized the need for study participants that come from varied backgrounds to enhance the value of research. She also noted that having conversations about health care preferences with loved ones is crucial.
